Evidence Limitations

What Peloryn does not claim.

Defensibility starts with honesty. A tool that overstates its certainty is the one that gets you in trouble — so here, plainly, is what Peloryn is, and what it is not.

The resolution boundary

When the trail ends, we draw the line — and show it.

Ownership often disappears into shell layers no record reaches. Where Peloryn can no longer resolve control with confidence, it states the boundary in the report rather than guessing past it.

Stated explicitly in §3 of the report — never resolved past the evidence.

In plain terms

What it is. What it isn’t.

Peloryn is
  • A risk-based due-diligence tool that helps you assess a vessel before exposure
  • An auditable, timestamped record of what you checked and when
  • A screen of the vessel and its entities against EU, UK, US and four more authorities
  • Decision support — it surfaces what deserves review
  • Honest about gaps, with “insufficient data” stated out loud
Peloryn is not
  • A legal determination, sanctions clearance, or a guarantee of legality
  • Proof of wrongdoing — a behavioural signal means review, not guilt
  • A claim that an unlisted vessel is therefore lawful to deal with
  • A conclusive identification of every ultimate beneficial owner
  • A replacement for your legal, insurance, or compliance judgement

Why we put this in writing

Maritime risk runs on incomplete data. AIS can be switched off or spoofed. Sanctions lists lag the reality on the water. Ownership hides behind jurisdictions built to hide it. A tool that pretended otherwise would hand you false confidence — the most dangerous thing a compliance officer can carry into a FIOD interview.

So Peloryn is built to do the opposite: surface what is reviewable, attribute every signal to a source and a moment, and mark the edge of what it knows. A finding means a vessel, a counterparty, or a behaviour deserves review — it is the start of a defensible decision, not the end of one.

That discipline is not a disclaimer bolted on at the bottom. It is the reason the file holds up.
